ETHICS for Engineers

An Engineer must always uphold the word ETHICS in his/her engineering practice. To me the meaning of ETHICS can be drawn from each of its letters, e.g:

E – Excellence, an engineer must do everything to his utmost ability, always give his best from engineering point of view (and once committed, not basing his work on the payment he received).

T – Trustworthy, an engineer must be a trustworthy person. The trust that public rely on!

H – Honesty, he must be honest to say the truth and only truth, again from engineering point of view. He must honest to his own capability, and must know his own limit. He must seek another expert when he is in doubt, and not pretend to know everything, even in his own field of expertise. Ask when in doubt! We do make mistake!! But, try to be the first to admit our own mistake. We are not God, not even in our own field of expertise.

I – Integrity, he must have integrity, not to subdue to economic benefit (or to the money owner), and sacrificing the public safety.

C – Care and Courage, he must care for the public and to the environment more than the care to the one who pay him. And for that he must have the Courage to say the word NO!

S – Selflessness, he must put public safety in front of his self benefit.

So, my principle is: IT IS BETTER TO SAY “NO’ AND LOSING OUR JOBS THAN DOING SOMETHING AGAINST THOSE ETHICS ABOVE.
